So all the functionality that you may have used in iTunes in the past are now available in these three new simplified apps: Music, Apple TV, and Podcasts.Early users who register on the app now will get free lifetime data sync between mobile and mac OS apps. And then you can brows your library and play shows by going to the shows or episodes option over here on the side bar on the left.
And here it is in the search results so I can click on that where I can subscribe to the show or download individual episodes. With an interface very similar to the music app, you can browse the free directory of podcasts or you can use the search bar up at the top to search for something specific. And if you listen to podcasts on your computer, you can use the new podcasts app.
Or you can go to your library using this library button up here at the top to browse or play movies or TV shows that you've already purchased. You can browse, search, and buy or rent movies or TV shows. The interface is similar to the iTunes store. I've got that here in the dock so I'll click on that to launch it. Your library of TV shows and movies are now handled by the new Apple TV app. Now the music app is not the only replacement for iTunes.
We're going to talk about syncing devices through Finder in another movie in this course. You do not use the music app to synchronize anything to devices. However, iPods, iPhones, and iPads will not show up in the music app as they did in iTunes. Just pop in the CD and it will appear in the side bar here on the left.
Browsing and playing music works the same as it did in iTunes, and don't worry, if you do still need to import music from a CD, and if you still have a CD drive for you MAC, that will work in the music app. You can browse by artist, by album, or by the main song list. And then you can browse through your library. There's also an option for the iTunes store if you just want to buy music or albums the old fashioned way. On the side bar on the left, you can browse the Apple Music service. Now in the account menu up at the top, you can sign into your Apple ID and manage your account, and you can join the Apple music service from there if you want. There's no TV shows, no movies, no podcasts. You can see the interface is very similar to iTunes, but there is no menu up at the top to choose the different types of libraries, because there's only one type of library, which is music. Of course you can still use it for music you import from CDs or files or music you buy from the iTunes store. It will prompt you to sign in or create an Apple Music membership when you first launch the app, but you can skip that.
Now the music app is really designed to integrate well with Apple's music streaming service called Apple Music. It's what most people will think of as a replacement for iTunes. So this is the new app for storing, organizing, and listening to music. I've got that here in the dock so I'll click on it launch. It's been broken up into several smaller applications. Now, starting with Catalina, iTunes is no longer a part of MAC OS. Over the years it became an ambitious and complex application. For many years, iTunes came bundled with MAC OS and was used for managing a library of music, movies, TV shows, and podcasts.
